課程目標 |
本學期專注於新聞英文，目標是訓鍊學生以英文做為吸收新知的主要工具，並對當前世界動態具有一定的敏銳度。英聽教材重點則是以議題性素材激發學生的分析與批判能力。學期末另將閱讀短篇小說，並簡介常見思辨謬誤。全英文上課。出席率與上課學習態度十分重要。
The purpose of this course is twofold: to help you gain a more sophisticated sense of the English language, and to keep you current with what is happening in the world today. In the Fall semester, the course was intended to hone your overall language proficiency. In Spring, we concentrate on news media English.
Pretty much everything is to be considered toward your final grade: from your classroom performance to the punctuality of your homework.

課程要求 |
1) Regular attendance. One unexcused absence may be allowed during the semester without penalty. Unexcused absence from four classes will result in zero point on the “attendance, preparation, and participation” part of your final grade, whereas unexcused absence from six classes will result in a failing grade.
2) Preparation and participation. Prior preparation is required for the reading discussion sessions. Class participation is essential.
3) Written exam: part 1 (Week 11). A small reading comprehension test on news stories from the previous week.
4) Written exam: part 2 (Week 13). On what is provided in class lectures on news media English, all the news articles for the semester, and the vocabulary of the listening materials. The exam will include vocabulary test, paraphrasing, and short-answer questions on the lectures.
5) Two homework assignments. Details to be provided in the first class.
6) Oral presentation. Details to be provided in the first class.
7) In-class writing. In-class writing may be assigned occasionally to monitor your participation in class.
8) (Optional) Tutorials with the TA. For people who need help with grammar, pronunciation or speaking.
